Packer Shoes Presents: the New Balance P740 OG “Worthy Express”

NB WORTHY WHT BLK-5

While many anticipate shooting guard Andrew Wiggins to go #1 overall in tonight’s’ NBA Draft to the Cleveland Cavaliers, we at Packer Shoes would like to take this time to look back at the #1 pick from the 1982 draft: “Big Game James” Worthy.

WORTHY EXPRESS

Coincidentally, the Los Angeles Lakers received their #1 draft pick in a trade with the Cleveland Cavaliers and a subsequent winning of a coin toss (pre-NBA draft lottery) which allowed them the opportunity to draft the then heralded small forward out of North Carolina. Given his success as one of the leading members of the Lakers’ “Showtime” squad, in 1985 Worthy signed an unprecedented endorsement contract with New Balance (a rather daring feet for a company who’s headquarters reside in the backyard of the Boston Celtics). “Big Game James” would go on to become New Balance’s first endorsed athlete to receive his own signature shoe that year in the form of the P740.

Various Worthy signature model shoes have come since the original release of the P740 and we have also seen retro releases of these shoes as well (sans the “Worthy” attachment). But after years of heightened demand and trials of meeting the exact specifications of the original model, we at Packer Shoes are proud to reintroduce the New Balance P740 OG “Worthy Express”.

Built with the exact same materials and tooling of the 1985 original , the 2014 New Balance P740 retro features a full length, high rebound 40 durometer EVA midsole that cushions every part of the foot as it gives a light, springy feel. It also has a thickly padded tongue, to cushion and protect the instep.

Outside, the 740’s padded ankle collar fits snugly without inhibiting the natural running and jumping motion. And it’s try-density outsole delivers excellent traction and durability. Up top, the P740 is constructed with an all leather upper with perforations in the toe box for breathability. Additional features include the tried and true speed lacing system for fast, secure lacing with less pressure on instep.
