The 1988 film, Coming to America, is widely regarded as one of the greatest comedic masterpieces of all time. In addition to all the memorable scenes and quotable lines that have endured over the years, it also provided no shortage of iconic visuals that are still fondly remembered to this day.
It’s hard to think about the movie without picturing Akeem and Semmi’s attempt to adapt to their new surroundings by abandoning their furs and gold for the more Queens-friendly look of some classic New York team Starter jackets. That image of Eddie Murphy and Arsenio Hall in their respective New York Mets and Jets jackets has become synonymous with Coming to America, and now almost 30 years later, we’re teaming up with Starter to re-release them to the public.
To recapture the vibe for 2016, we’ve enlisted two native New Yorkers who are as Queens as Queens gets — Action Bronson and Meyhem Lauren. While the two are obviously very well-acquainted with the Big Apple, we thought it would be fun to flip the script by immersing them in the out-of-towner experience with visits to souvenir shops, Canal Street jewelry stores and other tourist-approved destinations.
The guys embraced the chance to pay homage to a film they love and had a blast doing some very un-New Yorker things in the process. You can check out the full lookbook below and keep an eye out for the jackets to release at Packer on Saturday, January 23rd.
