Packer-Asics-Mitchell-Ness-Game-Set-Match-1
With one of the great annual American sporting events about to hit New York next week, we’ve partnered with ASICS and Mitchell & Ness for a new limited edition collection of tennis-inspired sneakers, apparel and accessories that runs the gamut from past to present and lifestyle to performance.

Mitchell & Ness got its start in the early 1900s stringing handcrafted tennis racquets, and has since firmly established themselves as one of the driving forces in heritage sports apparel.

The ASICS and Onitsuka Tiger®  brands are perhaps best known for their contributions to the world of running, but their tennis roots run deep as well. The Onitsuka Tiger brand dates back to the 1960’s in tennis and ASICS is currently one of the top performance tennis brands in the world.

Launching in conjunction with the start of the 2016 US Open Tennis Championships in NYC, this limited edition collection includes vintage tennis-inspired apparel pieces such as the Mitchell & Ness Arthur Ashe Track Jacket, court-ready polos and shorts, tees, pullovers, windbreakers and more.

The footwear portion of the collection spans several generations of ASICS and Onitsuka Tiger silhouettes spread across three product categories. The Onitsuka Tiger brand’s longstanding tennis roots are represented by the Lawnship® and GSM TM models, while the ASICS Tiger TM  brand favorites like the GEL-Lyte® III and GEL-Sight TM models seamlessly bridge the gap to the off-court tennis culture aesthetic that has been a timeless sportswear staple for decades. Looking to the present, the wildly popular GEL-Resolution® 6 performance model gets reimagined with a lifestyle twist punctuated by a mismatched colorway.

This limited edition collection will be released through a special pop-up activation space in the heart of NYC at Grand Central Station’s Vanderbilt Hall from Tuesday, August 30 to Thursday, September 1.

The Mitchell & Ness apparel ranges from $30-$150 from headwear to jackets and everything in between.

The ASICS/Onitsuka Tiger footwear ranges from $100-$160 across the five silhouettes.

packer-mn-varsity-p-warm-up-1
For those who may not know, the original Packer store was located in Yonkers, NY and proudly served the community there since 1907 before moving across the bridge into New Jersey in the mid 2000’s. Always one to embrace our heritage, the Ashburton Ave neighborhood that we used to call home made for the perfect backdrop to showcase our latest project. And who better to model it than one of the shop’s most loyal longtime customers in Yonkers’ own, Jadakiss, who has been a friend of the store since childhood.

The Mitchell & Ness Packer Varsity P Warm Up Jacket pays homage to our New York roots and an undying love for NYC basketball with a classic athletic look in an unmistakably New York color scheme. Built off of the iconic 1996-97 NY Knicks authentic nylon warm-up, the Packer version features a felt Varsity P logo on the chest with embroidered branding on the sleeve and a felt “League Champs” basketball patch on the right arm.

Look for the jacket to release 12 noon EST on Tuesday, April 26th, in-store at both shop locations and online at PackerShoes.com for a retail price of $150.

packer-exclusive-mitchell-and-ness-nj-nets-1993-warm-up-4
The 1990s are unquestionably one of the most fondly-remembered eras of NBA basketball, not just for the great players and on-court performances, but for the visual aesthetic of the league at the time. At this point, most of the iconic jerseys and sneakers from those years have seen retro releases a few times over, but there are still a handful of unreleased gems that have never seen a return to the market.

Topping that list is one of the wildest looks to ever hit the NBA hardwood. The New Jersey Nets definitely turned heads with their early 90s tie-dye uniforms, but they may have actually been one-upped by the insane warm-up suits that accompanied them.

At the time the warm-ups debuted, the team was unquestionably on the rise with a strong playoff-bound foundation led by Derrick Coleman, Kenny Anderson and Croatian star, Drazen Petrovic. Before the team could reach their full potential, they were dealt a devastating blow when a 1993 car crash tragically claimed the life of Petrovic.

It’s hard to look back at Nets gear from that time without thinking of the legend of Petro and what could have been. In tribute to a lost era of New Jersey basketball, we’ve teamed up with Mitchell & Ness to bring the authentic 1993-1994 warm-up back to the public for the first time ever, true to its original form.

Look for the jacket to release exclusively through Packer at 12 noon EST Wednesday, April 13th, in-store at both locations and online at PackerShoes.com.
